Over twelve months that equals simple annual interest; over longer periods it assumes income stays invested at the same yield. Withholding tax is the only deduction applied. CheckInvestNg applies 10% withholding tax to money market fund income as an assumption: whether it applies under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025 is an unresolved interpretation question (s.63(4) and s.162(1)(b)).

Yields are the figures each fund manager reported to the SEC's weekly NAV table for the week ended 9 Oct 2026, shown as published; they change weekly and are not guaranteed. The SEC table does not state whether management fees have already been deducted, so confirm the basis in the fund's fact sheet. The result cards above are after the 10% withholding tax CheckInvestNg assumes on distributions (CheckInvestNg applies 10% withholding tax to money market fund income as an assumption: whether it applies under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025 is an unresolved interpretation question (s.63(4) and s.162(1)(b)).), with the gross figure and the deduction itemised in the summary; no entry or exit charges are modelled. The reported yield is treated as an effective annual yield and applied for the fraction of a year held. Over twelve months that equals simple annual interest; over longer periods it assumes income stays invested at the same yield. The list shows the highest-yielding funds with at least ₦5bn under management plus the largest funds by assets. Minimums and redemption terms are in each fund's prospectus.

What Are Money Market Funds in Nigeria?

Money Market Funds (MMFs) in Nigeria are open-ended mutual funds regulated by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). They pool capital from many investors and invest in a diversified portfolio of short-term, high-quality instruments including Nigerian Treasury Bills (NTBs), Federal Government of Nigeria bonds, commercial papers, and short-term bank deposits. Because they invest in instruments that themselves carry very low credit risk, MMFs are generally classified as low-risk — but they are not government-guaranteed and not NDIC-insured, and the yield is variable rather than promised. The full risk profile is set out below.

The defining characteristic of a money market fund is daily liquidity. Unlike a fixed deposit or bond where your money is locked in until maturity, MMF investors can typically redeem their units on any business day. This makes MMFs an excellent vehicle for emergency funds, short-term savings, and cash management — combining the liquidity of a savings account with yields that are significantly higher.

Best Money Market Funds in Nigeria 2026 — Rankings

Yields as reported by each fund manager to the Securities and Exchange Commission for the week ended 9 October 2026, taken from that table's weekly yield column. The calculator's default shortlist is 14 of the 49 registered funds: the highest-yielding funds with at least ₦5 billion under management, plus the largest funds by assets. Arriving from a link that names a fund outside that shortlist adds it to the list, so the count shown above the comparison table is one higher. The top five by yield:

How Are MMF Returns Calculated in Nigeria?

Nigerian money market funds accrue returns daily. The figure quoted on this page is the SEC weekly table's yield column, headed “Yield (WTD)”: an annualised yield each manager reports for that week, not a year-to-date return. It moves from week to week. Separately from what the source publishes, this calculator then treats that figure as an effective annual yield. When you invest ₦1,000,000 in a fund yielding 21.31% per annum (the highest yield in the latest SEC table), that yield is treated as an effective annual rate and applied for the fraction of a year held — over twelve months the same figure as simple annual interest:

Projected Value = Principal × (1 + AnnualYield/100)^(Months/12)

= ₦1,000,000 × (1 + 0.2131)^(12/12) = ₦1,213,100 after 12 months

The calculator's headline figures then deduct a 10% withholding-tax assumption, treating the reported yield as gross of that tax — e.g., a 21.31% yield becomes approximately 19.18% after the assumed WHT. This is still significantly higher than typical bank savings rates. CheckInvestNg applies 10% withholding tax to money market fund income as an assumption: whether it applies under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025 is an unresolved interpretation question (s.63(4) and s.162(1)(b)). The SEC table does not state whether reported yields are before or after any withholding tax, so confirm the basis in the fund's fact sheet.

How to Use This Money Market Fund Calculator

  1. Select a fund — choose from the funds shown. The default shortlist is 14 of the 49 registered funds (the highest-yielding sizeable funds and the largest by assets, from the SEC weekly table), and a fund you arrive at from a link is added to it. The calculator automatically uses that fund's reported yield.
  2. Choose your mode — "Project Returns" to see how a given investment grows, or "Earn ₦X/Month" to calculate how much you need to invest to hit a target monthly income.
  3. Set your investment amount and duration — drag the sliders or click the values to type directly.
  4. Read the results — see projected value, total income earned, average monthly income, and annual yield.
  5. Study the chart — the line chart compares your MMF projection against a 4% savings account so you can see the true cost of keeping money idle.

Frequently Asked Questions

An SEC-regulated mutual fund that invests in short-term, high-quality instruments (NTBs, commercial papers, bank deposits). Offers daily liquidity and yields of 17–21% p.a. across the SEC table for the week ended 9 Oct 2026.

Which is the best money market fund in Nigeria in 2026?

By yield reported to the SEC (week ended 9 Oct 2026), among sizeable funds: First Ally Money Market Fund (21.31%), Coronation Money Market Fund (20.01%), Greenwich Plus Money Market Fund (19.07%), CardinalStone Money Market Fund (18.80%), STL Money Market Fund (18.67%). How are MMF returns calculated in Nigeria?

The reported yield is treated as an effective annual yield: Value = Principal × (1 + AnnualYield/100)^(Months/12). Over twelve months that equals simple annual interest. The source figure is the SEC weekly "Yield (WTD)" column, an annualised weekly-reported yield rather than a year-to-date return, and it is not re-compounded daily here.

Is withholding tax charged on money market fund returns?

This calculator deducts 10% WHT from MMF income, as Nigerian tax law now requires for Treasury Bills (since 28 October 2025), fixed deposits and dividends; FGN Savings Bonds remain the tax-exempt exception. CheckInvestNg applies 10% withholding tax to money market fund income as an assumption: whether it applies under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025 is an unresolved interpretation question (s.63(4) and s.162(1)(b)). The SEC table does not state whether reported yields are before or after any withholding tax.

How do I invest in a money market fund in Nigeria?

Directly via the fund manager's website/app, or through platforms like Cowrywise, Bamboo, or Risevest. You need a BVN and a Nigerian bank account. Minimums start from ₦5,000.
